Our Beautiful Farms

October 26, 2011

The theme in my life lately is farms.

I tromped through the dirt at a lot of them this fall: Genesis Growers, Three Sisters Garden, Harvest Moon Organic Farms, Heritage Prairie.

I was privileged to have Genesis Growers hire me to shoot for their website. I’m not a morning person, but I knew I had to rise before dawn to make the 80 mile drive to the farm.

Is there anything more beautiful than sunrise over soil like this?

This is one of my heroes, Vicki Westerhoff of Genesis Growers. She is a thoughtful organic grower. When you meet and get to know a farmer like Vicki, it is so obvious she is doing the right thing by the soil and the environment and the animals near her farm…not to mention the buyers like me who get to eat the sort of quality produce she grows. Why would you shop anywhere else?!

Vicki encouraged me to pick squash for myself and I came home with one of each of these – Long Island Cheddar, Pink Banana, Long of Naples, Turban, Cushaw – such wonderful names…and nice curves!

I have beautiful photos from other farms too, coming soon. In the meantime, read here about how Vicki and I feel about bugs!
